#46 Newsletter: Spring Fever
Marc Summers Unwraps Podcast, Jell-O, Reed's Candy, Sweet Things, Spring Fettucine and More
Hi. How are you? If you’re wondering, I’m still in spring mode. I don’t care if it is going to snow. Spring is here. The Academy Awards are right around the corner and it’s almost time to fill out NCAA brackets (!!!)
This week I’m sharing a handful of random things, like candy to keep in your purse, a podcast to listen and more.

My favorite kind of weather: jackets and shorts (this is South Carolina - our regular March vacation when I was growing up).
Shameless self promotion:
I have two articles in the March issue of Muncie Magazine.

new season - new mat (thanks to my aunts who gave me this mat).
Sullivan Hardware & Garden I’ve got spring fever (that’s been established!) and I stopped by Sullivan’s to gaze longingly at the spring flowers. I left with some yellow pansies and more spring inspiration.
My dad recommended Wes Montgomery’s music to me when I was in college and I proceeded to buy Wes Montgomery’s greatest hits. If you haven’t listened to this jazz guitar legend… you must. He would’ve been 100 years old on March 6th.
Marc Summers Unwraps - Marc Summers is an Indianapolis legend and this podcast is all about the path to success and obstacles along the way. I’ve only listened to one episode with Guy Fieri and I enjoyed it. Marc Summers and Guy Fieri are longtime friends from the Food Network and it was a heartfelt and honest conversation.
Sweet Things Chocolates - There’s something comforting about going to the same candy store I went to as a kid (although ownership changed). I can’t resist a good milk chocolate pretzel and Sweet Things makes and sells the best ones. They also sell all kinds of chocolates, caramels and don’t forget the cherry cordials. My mom says the cherry cordials are next level (my words), but they can drip when you bite into them so hold them over a napkin or plate. The messy cordial is worth it. My mom also recommends their caramels which don’t get stuck in your mouth.
Reed’s Root Beer Candy (around $1.25) I am a fan of root beer, especially a good quality iced cold root beer. These candies remind me of a classic root beer. They sell them at World Market and Sullivan’s Hardware. I believe you can buy them on Amazon as well.
Reed’s Butterscotch Candy (around $1.25) Of course I’ve got to promote another kind of Reed’s candy. The price is just right and I’m a fan of these candies which are individually wrapped (no risk of them falling in my purse and getting stuck there and ruined). They’re satisfying, when I want something besides a mint or a piece of gum. World Market sells these and so does Sullivan Hardware, where they are right by the register. (as they should be)
Jell-O (strawberry or orange) - I don’t remember eating a lot of jello as a kid, so maybe that’s why I like it now. The Jell-O brand is the only way to go and I say a big NO THANKS to the sugar free varieties out there (I’ll pass). You can find the strawberry and orange at most grocery stores for around $2.50 for a pack of 4. It’s a refreshing snack or the ideal food if I’m feeling under the weather.
Red Wine Vinegar (Pompeian is around $3 in most grocery stores) - I’m drizzling this vinegar on every salad and it gives a salad an extra punch that I want. Sometimes I don’t add any other salad dressing, only the red wine vinegar. I highly recommend adding this to a chopped salad. I know there are higher end red wine vinegars out there and I plan to try a few of them. Let me know if you have any recommendations.
Oakleys Bistro (lunch- fettucine with chicken artichoke meatballs) There’s just something about a plate of homemade fettucine with meatballs. Oakleys serves up a divine plate of pasta with the tastiest chicken meatballs. I ordered this dish to go and it’s the perfect portion to share.
Laura (1944) It’s almost time for the Academy Awards- one of my favorite nights of the year. Let’s chat about Laura. It’s a murder mystery about who killed the beautiful and successful, Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney). The music is dreamy and the cast is equally a delight, with the beautiful Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews (playing the ultimate no nonsense detective, Mark McPherson) and possible suspects, Vincent Price and Clifton Webb as Laura’s love interests and Judith Anderson, as Laura’s aunt.
